How to Play the Sliding Puzzle

The rules are the same ones puzzle fans have loved since the 1800s. The board holds numbered tiles with exactly one empty space. Click or tap any tile that sits next to that space, and it slides in. The tile can only move into the gap, so every move shifts exactly one tile.

The goal is to arrange the numbers in order: 1 in the top left corner, reading across each row, until the last tile sits just above the bottom right and the empty space returns to its home. Your move counter goes up with every slide, the timer starts on your first move, and your best move count is saved for each board size. On a keyboard, the arrow keys also work: an arrow slides the tile on that side of the gap into the space.

Choose 3x3 for a five minute warmup, 4x4 for the full classic 15 puzzle challenge, or 5x5 when you want the deep end. All sizes are always solvable, because the shuffle is created by making hundreds of real moves from the solved board rather than by swapping tiles randomly. How to Solve It: The Zone Method

  1. Solve the top row. Place tile 1 in its corner first, then maneuver tile 2, then tile 3. Work from the edges inward and use the rows below as your workspace.
  2. Solve the second row. On a 4x4 board, place tiles 5, 6 and 7 the same way. The trick with the last tile of a row is to park it one row below its final spot, slide the finished tiles out of reach mentally, and rotate it up.
  3. Handle the last two rows as one block. Once the top rows are locked, never move them again. Solve the remaining tiles by cycling them around the lower rectangle until they line up.
  4. Think in cycles. Three tiles often need to rotate among three positions. Instead of moving them one at a time, find the empty route that rotates all three together. This is the core skill of the whole game.
  5. Plan two slides ahead. Before each move, ask what position you want two moves from now. Random sliding feels active but usually costs triple the moves.

On the 3x3 board the zone method is overkill, so it is the perfect place to practice cycles. Move up to 4x4 when 3x3 stops being hard.
