How to Play Chess for Beginners
Chess is a board game for two sides, white and black. Each side starts with sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights and eight pawns. White moves first, then the sides take turns. You win when the enemy king is stuck in check with no way out. That is checkmate.
Each piece has its own way to move. The pawn steps one square ahead, but takes on a slant. On its first step a pawn may leap two squares. The rook slides in straight lines. The bishop slides on slants and never leaves its color. The queen does both, which is why she is the prize. The knight hops in an odd L shape and can jump right over other pieces. The king steps one square in any direction.
One more rule you will love: if your pawn makes it all the way to the far side, it grows into a queen. I have won more games with one brave pawn than with any fancy plan.
Chess Rules You Should Know
- Check. When a king is under attack, that is check. The player must fix it at once: move the king, block the hit, or take the attacker.
- Checkmate. When check has no fix, the game ends right there.
- Castling. Once per game your king may hop two squares toward a rook, if neither of them has moved, if the squares between are free, and if the king does not pass through danger.
- En passant. A sneaky pawn rule. When an enemy pawn leaps two squares and lands beside your pawn, you may take it as if it had stepped only one. You get one turn to do it.
- Promotion. A pawn that reaches the last rank turns into a queen, rook, bishop or knight. Most players pick a queen.
- Draws. Games can end in a draw by stalemate, by fifty quiet moves, by the same position showing up three times, or when neither side has enough fire left to mate.
Chess vs Computer With a Brain That Grows
Here is my best bit. The computer in this game does not stay still. It starts at Normal brain. If you beat it, it trains on that loss, and next time it plays stronger. Beat it again and it climbs to Expert. Beat it once more and you face Master, its final form.
I built it this way because flat difficulty gets boring fast. Too easy and you nap through it. Too hard and you quit. A brain that grows with you keeps every game at the edge of your skill. Your brain level is saved in your browser, so it waits for you between visits.
Prefer to pick by hand? You can choose Easy, Normal, Hard, Expert or Master instead. Easy is great for kids and first timers. Expert and Master will test anyone. I still have not beaten Master, and I wrote this page.
2 Player Chess on One Screen
Want the old school feel? Pick the 2 Players mode and share one screen, one board and one set of moves, pass and play. The board can flip after each move so the player on turn always sees the pieces from their own side. My dad and I play this way after lunch, and he still owes me one rematch.
Simple Chess Tips to Win More Games
- Own the middle. Pieces in the center see more of the board. Fight for those four middle squares early.
- Castle early. A king in the corner behind pawns is a safe king. Do it in the first ten moves if you can.
- Do not move one piece twice. In the opening, bring new pieces out instead. More pieces ready means more threats.
- Count before you trade. Before you swap pieces, count who wins material. My worst losses came from trades I did not count.
- Look at what the foe wants. Before each move of yours, ask what their last move threatens. Half of all beginner games turn on this one habit.
- Push pawns with care. Pawns cannot walk backwards. Every pawn step opens a door you cannot close.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play chess vs computer here for free?
Yes. This chess game is fully free with no signup. Pick the vs Computer mode and the AI plays a real game of chess against you right in your browser, with no download and no account.
What does the adaptive brain level mean?
The computer starts at Normal brain. Every time you beat it, it trains on that loss and comes back stronger, climbing from Normal to Hard, then Expert, then Master. Beat it four times in a row and you face its final form.
How do I play 2 player chess here?
Pick the 2 Players mode in the new game window. Both players use the same screen, one set each. The board can flip after every move so each player sees the pieces from their own side.
Does this chess game follow the real rules?
Yes. Castling, en passant, pawn promotion, check, checkmate and stalemate all work the way real chess works. Draws by fifty quiet moves, by repetition and by bare kings are called too.
Can I undo a move in chess here?
Yes. Press Undo to take back moves. Against the computer it rolls back both your move and the computer reply, so it is your turn again. In two player mode it rolls back one move at a time.
How do I get better at chess as a beginner?
Keep your king safe by castling early, think before you move a piece to a square a pawn can attack, and try not to move the same piece twice in the opening. Play the Easy brain first, then climb as the wins feel easy.
